Route overview

About this route

This circular walk climbs onto the open fells above Thirlmere, with a steady ascent that soon brings wider views over the Lake District. The route visits Wren Crag first, then continues to High Rigg SE Top before reaching High Rigg itself, so you get a good feel for the shape of the ridge as the walk develops.

The higher sections are exposed and can feel rough underfoot, with some rocky and uneven stretches that need care in wet or windy weather. Lower down, the path is more straightforward, but the ground can still be muddy after rain. It is a good half-day walk for anyone happy with a moderate climb and open fell scenery.

On a clear day, the open ground gives broad views across the surrounding hills and water below. Carry enough layers for changeable weather, and take extra care on the steeper sections where the path can be less distinct.
