Route overview

About this route

This tough circular from Thirlmere climbs steeply past Stybeck Waterfall and onto the rocky slopes of Sticks Pass, a high mountain crossing that rises quickly to the Helvellyn ridge. The trail continues over Raise and Whiteside, where wide-ranging views take in Ullswater, Helvellyn, and the northern fells on clear days. The descent is steep and rough underfoot, dropping past Fisherplace Gill Waterfall before making a worthwhile detour to Thirlmere Waterfall, one of the Lake District’s most beautiful wild swimming spots. From here the path winds gently back into the valley. With relentless climbs, exposed ridges, and loose sections, this is a demanding route best saved for calm, dry weather with good visibility.
